Fannie Mae Martin Toliver was born September 28, 1928 in Greenville, Alabama, to the late Isaac and Annie Mae Jones and was raised in Coretta, West Virginia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William Martin and her second husband, Lee Toliver; one son, Robert Martin; two daughters, Satewria Murphy, and Brenda Martin; three grandsons, Keith Sylvester, and Michael Ceceil; one granddaughter, Willinita Martin; five brothers, Willie, Nate, Johnny, Andrew and Ike Jones. Jones; one sister, Dorothy Mae Reese, four sons-in-law, Edward Cardwell, James Dorsey, Robert Norton, and Kelvin Isaac; and one daughter-in- law, Theresa Martin.
Fannie married William R. Martin in 1946. Eleven children were born to this beautiful union of 34 years, before God called him home.
Several years after William's death God blessed Fannie with another wonderful husband, Lee Toliver, and she and her family enjoyed 12 years with him until God called him home.
Fannie has always had a very close relationship with God. She accepted Christ at an early age and spent a lifetime in service to Him. She was a dedicated servant, honoring God inside and outside of the church. While living in West Virginia, she was a member of the MT. Zion Church in Pageton and Mt. Airy Baptist Church in Coalwood.
She was faithful and actively participated in various capacities. She sung on choirs, and served on the Finance, Trustee, and Usher Ministries. She offered her service in any capacity where she saw a need. She also participated in keeping God's house in a neat, beautified manner, as she did her own home. She was known to be an immaculate housekeeper.
When Ms. Fannie, as PVBC affectionately called her, moved to Lynchburg and came to Pleasant Valley, approximately 10 years ago, she never presented herself as a guest, she came as family. She had a kind word and a smile for everyone. She loved everyone and everyone loved her. She participated in any manner necessary. She was known for her wonderful cooking, and she often shared with others (especially baked goods). We were so blessed to have her as a member.
Ms. Fannie loved her family and her family loved her. During her last years, she had many health problems, and she handled them with faith, grace and beauty. She was a wonderful lady who was a symbol of fruitfulness, love, compassion and good taste. She was always: dressed to the nine, coordinated, beautiful and fine.
Ms. Fannie is survived by eight of her eleven children. Left to hold her in loving memory are, three sons, William, Benjamin, and Michael (Tracey), Martin, all of Cleveland Ohio; five daughters, Helen Isaac, Joyce Cardwell, Nancey Martin Dorsey, of Cleveland Ohio, Diane Thomas (Greg),of Concord, VA, Charlene Martin, of Lynchburg, VA; three brothers, David, Jimmy, Robert (Teresa) Jones, two sisters, Bernice Jones Glenn and Lillie Mae Slaughter, of Cleveland, Ohio; one son-in-law, Bernard Murphy, one daughter-in-law, Patricia Martin; 43 grandchildren, a host of great grands, great, great grands, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She also leaves a special friend, Mrs. Marvelene Simon, with whom she shared a special friendship and talked on the phone daily.
