Eugenia (Gena) Sewell Davidson, born on November 9, 1942, passed away peacefully in Lynchburg, Virginia on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at the age of 83. Gena’s journey began in Columbus, Georgia, where she was born to Russell and Blanche Sewell and grew up alongside her younger brother, Russell Neal Sewell, Jr. Lavonia, Georgia, home of her grandparents, always held a special place in Gena’s heart, and she cherished visiting there throughout her life.
After completing her degree in education at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, Gena moved to Virginia Beach to pursue her passion for teaching. It was during her time at the beach that she met Bill, a neighbor serving in the Navy, who became her beloved husband for 58 wonderful years. Together, they settled in Bill’s hometown of Lynchburg, where Gena truly made her mark. She quickly became an integral part of the community, dedicating her energy and warmth to organizations such as the Junior League, Sandusky House, and PTA’s. Her commitment shone brightest at St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she played a pivotal role in founding the day school in 1995.
Gena had an extraordinary love for people, especially children, and was a nurturing presence to her own three boys as well as to neighbors, family, and friends. Her career as a preschool teacher at Randolph Macon and her time working at the bookstore in Boonsboro Shopping Center brought her immeasurable joy—combining her passion for reading, connecting with others, and recommending books.
She is fondly remembered as the loving mother to Scott (Beth), Clark (Sari), and Neal (Emily), the grandmother to Faire (Andrew), Will, Carrie (Blaise), Russ, Bella, Sally, and the great-grandmother to Scott and Wendy. Gena’s vibrant spirit and caring personality have left an enduring legacy. Her knack for making everyone feel welcome and her eagerness to offer advice and conversation will be dearly missed.
Gena touched many lives, and her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her. A memorial service will be held on Saturday May 2, 2026, at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 1:00 PM with a reception to follow.
