Ella Drinkard Duckworth

October 15, 1926 — January 23, 2021

Ella May Drinkard Duckworth died on Saturday, January 25, 2021. Born in Lynchburg, VA on October 15, 1926, she was the daughter of George Lawson Drinkard and Margaret Buch Drinkard. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Paul Frederick Duckworth. She is survived by her 3 children, Mary Sue Childress (Deak) of Lynchburg, Peggy Martin (Archie) of Tybee Island, GA, and son, Fred Duckworth (Kathy) of Richmond, VA, 6 grandchildren, Brent Childress (Bianca), Deak Childress (Megan), McLeish Martin (Kiri), Paul Duckworth, Eliza Duckworth, and Nick Duckworth. She is also survived by her 8 great-grandchildren, Isabella, Ava May, Annalisa, Dylan, Zoe, Lawson, Ella and Hazel.

Ella graduated from EC Glass High School and Flora MacDonald College (now St. Andrews University) in Red Springs, NC. She taught math at Linkhorne Middle School for over 20 years, and her favorite hobby was making pottery with all her “pottery friends”, first at the Fine Arts Center and after it closed at the Academy Center of the Arts, May Carter studio. These friends provided many hours of joy and were considered a treasured part of her extended family. She also volunteered at the VA Baptist Hospital Gift Shop until the loss of her sight forced her to give it up.

Ella was the 2nd baby to be baptized at Westminster Presbyterian Church and she loved to tell people that her mother and dad first took her to church when she was only two weeks old. Until this past year with the Covid 19 outbreak you could find her faithfully in “her” pew every Sunday.

As one of her dear neighbors so aptly put it, she was an honorary mama and nana to all of her neighbors, past and present. Her love of reading, pottery, quick wit and afternoon glass of wine were an example and inspiration to all of them for a well lived life.

Due to the Covid Pandemic, services will not be held until the late Spring/Summer. An announcement will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her memory to either the Presbyterian Cemetery, 2020 Grace St., Lynchburg, VA 24504 or Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1022 Floyd St., Lynchburg, VA 24501
