Eleanor Hicks Whorley of Lowry died Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Oakwood Health & Rehab. She was born in Moneta, Virginia on December 27, 1919. Eleanor was the first daughter and forth child of the late Sallie Holland Hicks and Wesley P. Hicks. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Ashby L. Whorley Sr.; her son, James R. Whorley; a daughter-in-law; Brenda W. Whorley; brothers: W. Vernon Hicks, Byron A. Hicks, Thomas W. Hicks, and Jack H. Hicks, and sisters; Mary Louise Hicks, and Janet H. Carter.

Eleanor is survived by a son; Ashby, Jr. and his wife, Catherine of South Boston, daughter-in-law; Peggy Whorley of Forest, grandson; James Vincent Whorley and great granddaughter, Carolanne, step-grandchildren, Brigette Wucher (Scot) and E. Sidney Martin, III (Cathy), four step- greatgrandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Eleanor was a graduate of Madison College where she majored in Home Economics. She was a homemaker, a loving wife and mother and taught Home Economics at New London Academy, Bedford High School and Liberty High School. She was an active member of the Center Point United Methodist Church as well as the UMW, The United Daughters of the Confederacy, The Bedford Historical Society and the Elks Club.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm, Saturday, October 24, 2015 in Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford, with Rev. William R. Clark officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Saturday, at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Center Point United Methodist Church, or Brookville High School, Jim Whorley Field House Fund, 100 Laxton Road. Lynchburg, VA 24502.
