Edward Heald Fox passed away peacefully on Friday, October 9, just three days after his 90th birthday. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cary Nelson Fox; his father, Thomas Hubert Fox Jr.; his mother, Lucy Chiswell Heald Fox; and his brother, Thomas Hubert Fox III.

He is survived by his four children: Thomas Hubert Fox II (Reem) and his three children, Ned (Lauren), TJ (Katherine), and Trevor (Chelsea); Cary (Casy) Fox Williams (Chris) and their two children, Preston and Grace; Caperton Fox Campbell; and Elizabeth Fox Ball (Dave) and their two children, Scooter and Stuart. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Lexi and Oliver.

Known affectionately to many as “Popcorn,” Ed was born on October 6, 1936, and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia. He attended Episcopal High School before graduating from E.C. Glass High School. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1958.

Ed enjoyed a long career in banking, beginning at First & Merchants Bank and concluding at Bank of America. He was beloved by his many customers, most of whom joined him to celebrate his retirement.

Ed was a member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he served as an acolyte during his teenage years. He was also a longtime member of Oakwood Country Club, where he earned his nickname and enjoyed countless rounds of golf. As a member of the Lynchburg Exchange Club, he was known for being the best at serving sausages at the Pancake Jamboree. After retiring, he began volunteering with Meals on Wheels and especially enjoyed visiting with the people on his route each week.

Above all, Ed loved his family. He delighted in watching them play sports and hearing about their many activities. An avid sports fan, he had a special passion for baseball. He first cheered for the Yankees and somehow managed to get the phone number for the Yankees dugout, hoping to speak with Mickey Mantle. Later, he became a Cubs fan and was thrilled to see them finally win the World Series in 2016.

Those who knew Ed will remember that he moved at his own pace, had a contagious laugh, and possessed the driest sense of humor. Most of all, they will remember his sly Fox grin.

The family extends its heartfelt thanks to The Elms of Lynchburg and its staff for their years of care, as well as to James River Hospice for its continued support.

A visitation will be held at Tharp Funeral Home on Thursday, October 15, 2026, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. A graveside service will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery on Friday, October 16, 2026 at 1:00 PM.
