Edith Hartless Coffey peacefully passed away August 24th, 2025 at the age of 97. Edith lived a full and active life, spending her final years in the comfort of her own home.
Edith was born and raised in Lynchburg. She was the daughter of the late Robert Edward Hartless Sr. and Lewey Dean Hartless and was married 30 years to the late Farrow Lawton Coffey. She pulled up roots in 1979 to move to California so that her youngest daughter could continue her high school years there. While there she worked in real estate at Merrill Lynch and The Prudential, receiving multi-million dollar agent awards for her service. In 1991 she pulled up roots again to move back to Lynchburg to be with family when she became a grandmother. She continued selling property in Lynchburg with Smith and Thurman and Century 21 while building her own business of rental properties.
Edith cherished the simple joys of life, especially good meals shared with family and friends at home, Fiddler’s Green, various lakes through the years or the Peaks of Otter (a beloved favorite). In her retirement she enjoyed traveling to California (her last trip being at age 95!), Hawaii, cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska and spending some winters in Florida. Her love for singing and dancing were joyfully expressed through her involvement with the Ageless Wonders, a spirited group of men and women aged 50-90, based in Lynchburg. They performed in and around Lynchburg at churches and retirement facilities.
She is survived by her daughters, Janet C. Powell and Margaret C. Booth, her grandchildren, Maria Hartley, Cory Booth and Marrow Booth, and her great-grandson Kaden C. Patille. Edith was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Marie Coffey, whose memory remained ever-present in her heart.
Edith was fortunate to have received excellent and compassionate care from Centra Home Health over the last 2.5 years and Centra Hospice the last couple months of her life. She would not have been able to have achieved her goal of ending her days at home without their reliable and proficient help. They have our gratitude.
A Celebration of Life with be held for friends and family at the Peaks of Otter Lodge in the Calvin Rice room on Sunday, October 19th, 2025 at 11am. Lunch and a stroll around the lake to follow.
