Dorothy Lee Karnes Settles Brugh, 91, of Bedford and formerly of Vinton, passed away and was reunited with her parents on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 in Oakwood Health & Rehab Center. She was born the oldest of eleven children on Thursday, April 29, 1920 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Leola Merton James Karnes and James Miller Karnes.
Dorothy was a member of Blue Ridge Baptist Church in Vinton. God and family always came first in her life. She was a mother figure and caregiver to many people. Dorothy was known as an excellent seamstress. She also enjoyed playing Rook.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her first husband, Noah Settles; her second husband, William Eugene Brugh; two brothers, James Carl Karnes and Nolan Wayne Karnes; and a sister, Opal K. Ferguson. She is survived by two brothers, W. Ray Karnes and his wife, Mae of Bedford and Elwood L. Karnes of Bedford; five sisters, Grace K. Johnson, Irene K. Holdren, Winnie K. Ashwell and Anne K. Duncan all of Bedford and Hazel K. Gray of Vinton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Dorothy\"™s life will be conducted at 11 AM, Thursday, January 19, 2012 in the Tharp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tom Hurt and nephew, Danny Holdren officiating. Burial will follow in Suck Spring Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 PM & 6-8 PM, Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, 586-3443.
