Doris Richards Pettman

Doris Lee Richards Pettman 98, of Bedford, passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2019. She was born in Akron, OH on October 14, 1921. A daughter of the late Harold A. Richards and Deliah Osmer Richards. In addition to her parents Doris was preceded in death by her loving husband, Howard F. Pettman; her son, Daniel “Dan” Pettman; one brother, Harold A. Richards and two sisters, Lois Shuey and Phyllis Blake.
Doris was a Depression era child, raised in a loving home in Akron, OH. During WWII she worked in the factory as a “Rosie the Riveter” which helped pay her way through College. She graduated with a bachelors degree in Music, a lifelong passion of hers. Doris was active in her church and loved the Lord. She lived out her faith daily; praying for others, spending time in God’s word and joyfully anticipating his return. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed long walks and loved her pets, especially Midnight the cat. Doris was a kind, compassionate listener and was dearly loved by her family and friends. Following her retirement from teaching at Lyncourt School in Syracuse, NY she moved to Florida for 10 years and spent the last 22 years in Bedford, VA in the home lovingly built by her late son. Her legacy of love will continue on in the hearts and memories of all who came to know and love her throughout her 98 precious years.
Doris is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Osborne and her husband, Neil and Deborah Spencer and her husband, William “Ric”; daughter-in-law, Grace Brandt Pettman; 9 grandchildren, Marilyn, Carlyle, Evelyn, Timothy, Titus, Abigail, Nathanael, Faith and Hope; five great-grandchildren, Diego, Carmen, Shiloh, Forrest “Cruz” and George. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Monday, December 23, 2019 at Tharp Funeral Chapel in Bedford with Pastor Rick Vis officiating. Burial will follow in the Pettman Family Cemetery.
