Doris O'Connor Rice Duff, 84, of Big Island, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2026. She was the wife of the late Leonard Ray Duff.
Born on August 25, 1941, in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Napoleon Bonaparte O'Connor and the late Lillie Mae Taylor O'Connor.
Doris was most proud of being a mother. Her love knew no limits as it was not only her own family with whom she showed affection and support, but rather everyone she knew. She was the family nurse; it came naturally to her, always coming to your home and taking care of you until you were well. She possessed a good listening ear and spent countless hours trying to teach family members how to make biscuits. She had an abiding sense of wonder, whether it was traveling or eating new food, all you had to say was let's try!
Her family will miss her laughter and fun spirit and will forever cherish our memories of a life well- lived.
She leaves her family to cherish her memory her children, Denise Wilkinson (David), Deborah Padgett, Kay Rice-Dugger, Danny Rice; grandchildren, Taylor Nash (Arriel), David Ray and Jonathan Wilkinson. Charlie Padgett (Jessica), Elise Padgett, Jamie Nolder, Debra Rice and Joshua Duff; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren, a sister, Nora "Pat" Watkins (Dean); brothers, Michael O'Connor and Johnny O'Connor; and a host of nieces and nephews and people she considered her family.
In addition to her husband Ray, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Daniel Rice; son, Lenny Duff, brother, Donald O'Connor and son-in-law, Charles Dugger.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Big Island Fire Department, P.O. Box 122, Big Island, VA 24526
