Tharp Funeral Home - Bedford
11:00 - 11:15 am (Eastern time)
Dolphine Lucille Overstreet Swofford left this life peacefully on June 22,2026 to join her Heavenly Father and the love of her life James O. Swofford Jr.
She was born February 27, 1928 to Elbert D. (Ned) and Lura Foster Overstreet. Raised in Bedford VA, she was a graduate of Montvale High School and National Business College.
Marrying USAF Master Sargent, James Swofford, she created a loving home in many US States and Okinawa Japan, raising five children. She returned to Bedford with family in tow in 1976 to assist her Father with the farm.
She was a woman with a very big heart and hands that were never idle. Her passions were sewing, reading, crafting and baking goodies. Every child and grandchild received one of her handmade quilts sewn with care. Christmas was made especially magical with her gifts of painted ornaments, quilted wall hangings, cloth bells, angels and more. Each year we all received a fruit cake and a box of cookies made with love.
Dolphine, our Dot, our Dolly was a devoted member of her lifelong church, Thaxton Baptist. If you knew her, you knew her faith. It was quiet, sturdy, generous. She was an eager volunteer at many a Samaritans Table. She loved nothing more than spending time with her family, friends and those in need.
She is survived by her five children James O. Swofford III and wife, Laura, of Missoula MT, Karen K. Glaeser and husband, Chris, of Plymouth MN, Michael D. Swofford of Missoula MT, Toni G. Latham and husband, Alfred, of Darby MT, and Wendy C. Swofford of Austin, TX; nine grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brother Earl Wallace Overstreet of Bedford, many cousins, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband James O. Swofford Jr and two brothers Elbert D. Jr and Ralph Perry (Bunky) Overstreet.
Her sweet nature will sincerely be missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Home 320 N. Bridge St Bedford VA. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
