Dennis Clay Cowart, 78 of Rustburg, passed away at his home July 13, 2026. He was the devoted husband of Pamela Mayhew Cowart for 54 years.

Dennis was the eighth child of the late Marion Jesse Cowart and Thelma Wilson Cowart. He also was preceded in death by brothers Jesse, Earl, Larry and Roger and a sister Marjorie. He is also survived by brothers Leonard of Rustburg and Louis Cowart (Nancy) of College Grove, Tennessee.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Dennis Michael Cowart (Darlene) of Brookneal, a daughter Courtney Cowart Phillips (Josh) and two granddaughters, Kinley Chase Phillips and Cambre Reese Phillips. They were the shining stars in his life. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Nancy Cowart of Rustburg and Carolyn Cowart of Altavista.

He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War.

He was the owner of Main Street Service Center in Rustburg for 25 years. Being an avid fan of Rustburg High School, he was also president of RHS Athletic Boosters for 20+ years, red was his favorite color. He was the biggest fan of his children and granddaughters in all of their sports missing very few games.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Rustburg United Methodist Church, 664 Village Highway, Rustburg VA 24588. This will be a very casual event and it would be great if you would wear red in his memory.
