Listen to Obituary

Surrounded by family, David Warren Hawks, Sr. went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. Born on September 4, 1941, in Lynchburg, VA, he was the son of the late William and Lorene Hawks. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son Rodney Grubbs (Pam), his two sisters Fay Cash (Massie) and Joyce Kent (Walter); and his three brothers Billy (Pearl), Raymond (Betty), and Nathan (Faye) Hawks.

Above all, David was a devoted husband for 54 years to his wife Linda Stinnette Hawks who says he was the best husband she could have ever asked for. During their life together he was a faithful member of Sandusky Baptist Church.

Other than his family, David’s most profound achievement was the 10 years he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. During that time, he was stationed as an electrician on-board the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid with the U.S. Seventh Fleet. One of his greatest joys was to tell stories and reminisce about those days at sea and his time in the military.

After the completion of his Naval career in 1969, David began a new career with the U.S. Postal Service that lasted over 34 years, from which he retired.

Also known as Pops, Papa or Big David, those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda; his children, David W. Hawks, Jr., New Orleans, LA, Eddie Grubbs (Jill), and Kimberly Grubbs; and his grandsons, Micah Hawks, New Orleans, LA. Ryan Grubbs and Aaron Grubbs, Florida. David’s good nature and youthful spirit also touched the lives of many special nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, not to mention his beloved grand-dogs & grand-cats.

A celebration of David’s life will be held at Sandusky Baptist Church, 915 Catalina Pl, Lynchburg, VA 24502, on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour before the service beginning at 1:00 p.m.
