David Bocock Wingfield, 85, of Lynchburg, VA breathed his last on Easter Sunday April 4th at his retirement home in the Westminster Canterbury. He died of complications brought on by Parkinson disease.
David was born in Lynchburg City on October 31, 1924 a son of the late John Fowler Wingfield and Ruth Armetta Bocock Wingfield. He was the couple\"™s second child. After his father\"™s death in 1928, he lived at times with his aunt, Sarah Francis Wingfield Ogelsby, and her husband John David Ogelsby. He attended Lynchburg schools until 1941. He served in the US Navy from 1943 until 1946. He returned to Lynchburg to finish his education and remained a resident until his death. David married his only wife, Susan Conde Gravely Wingfield, of Richmond, in 1953. He helped design, construct, and lived in his Lynchburg home for 46 years. David finished his high school education in order to attend Lynchburg College. He graduated in 1950. David took a sales job at Gary Steel Company. He later worked in sales in the medical supply industry, retail car sales, and finished his career with Allen Morrison Company of Lynchburg. David retired in 1980. David was an avid sportsman. He hunted and fished with his friends for most of his adult life. He piloted his own offshore fishing boat, the Bleu Max, out of Cape Hatteras Inlet NC. He was a licensed private pilot and flew small aircraft for several years. He built and flew model airplanes from age 15 until well past age 80, and was a long time member of the American Model Association and Central Virginia Radio Control Association along with generations of modeling friends. David won multiple awards and competitions at the local and national levels for finishing, racing, and aerobatics models. David was long time member of the Court Street Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Patrick Louis Branch, Jr. of Floyd VA. David is survived by his sisters, Martha Francis Wingfield Embry of Fredericksburg VA, and Mary Virginia Branch of Check VA. He is survived by two sons, David B. Wingfield, Jr., and, John Winston Wingfield, along with his wife Patricia Tinsley Wingfield, of Lynchburg. He had two grandchildren, Peyton Tinsley Wingfield and Leah Virginia Wingfield of Lynchburg.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, Virginia. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 8, 2010, in the Chapel of Tharp Funeral Home with Rev. C. Douglas Pillow officiating followed by a procession to, and brief graveside prayer at Spring Hill Cemetery.
