Charles Richard Wilson Schoew

Charles Richard Wilson Schoew of Lynchburg died Saturday February 13, 2010 at his residence.  He was 88.  He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret Ann (the former Margaret Ann Hopkins of Lynchburg) and two of their three children, Susan Schoew Cox and her husband Ron of Jacksonville, FL; Richard Wilson Schoew and his wife Winifred of Lynchburg.  His third child, Charles Hopkins Schoew (Chuck) died in 1951.  He is also survived by a sister Nanette Schoew Jordan of Virginia Beach.  He was preceded in death by his brother Fredrick William Schoew, Jr.  Surviving grandchildren are Ronald Chadwick Schoew Cox of Lynchburg, Matthew Hopkins Cox of Nashville, TN, Ann Morrison Schoew of Richmond, Clara Wilson Schoew of Richmond, and Margaret Schoew Retz of Lynchburg.  He is survived by three great grandchildren.

He was born in Huntington, WV January 9, 1922, the son of Fredrick William Schoew and Clara Wilson Schoew.  Charlie came to VES in 1937.  At VES, he was an outstanding athlete serving as Captain and earning All State honors on the football, basketball, and tennis teams.  He was also All State in football for both the Virginia Prep School League and the Military League.

After graduating from VES he attended the University of Virginia.  There he lettered in freshman basketball and served as co-captain.  Later he joined the United States Army Air Corps where he served as a B24 pilot and earned the rank of Captain.  He flew 48 combat missions over Europe for the 15th Airforce.  He was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross and The Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters.

After military service he married the love of his life Margaret Ann Hopkins and they resided in Lynchburg.  He was the West Virginia State junior tennis singles champion in 1940.  He was a finalist in the Lynchburg City Tournament for 10 years and winner for 7 consecutive years, 1949-1955.  Charlie was co-founder of the C.V.I.T.T with Billy Fix and Charlie Robinson.  He was also Norfolk City Doubles champion two consecutive years with his partner Vince Thomas in the early forties.

Charlie served several years as coach for the Lynchburg City Little League Baseball Team during the fifties.  He was a realtor from 1945-2005 and owner of Hopkins Brothers Realty.  He served as President of the Lynchburg Real Estate Board in 1955.  He also served as Vice President of the Virginia Real Estate Association.   He was a board member of the Lynchburg Planning Commission, the Lynchburg Area Development Corporation, and Oakwood Country Club.  He was President of Mingo Land Company and Turkey Creek Oil and Gas Company, of West Virginia.  Additionally, he was a board member and director of First Federal and One Valley Bank for 43 years.

A memorial service will be held at twelve noon Tuesday February 16, 2010 in the First Presbyterian Church chapel, 1215 VES Road.
