Charles "Hackie" Gordon Hurt

On August 19, 2026, Charles Hackie Hurt, 79, of Big Island, Virginia, went to be with the Lord, his mother, father and siblings. Heaven got a little rowdier when the doors opened with his family there to greet him.

Charles “Hackie” Hurt was born on September 28, 1946, to the late Mr. James R. Hurt, Sr. and Mrs. Carrie V. Hurt of Big Island. He was also welcomed in heaven by his three siblings, Joe Harris, James Robert Hurt Jr and Susie Hamilton; grandparents, Albert and Ada Scott and Charles and Susie Hurt; and great-grandson, Riley Quiggle.

Hackie attended school at Susie B Gibson. He worked for Caldwell & Banker, Schewels Furniture, and Georgia Pacific for many many years before retiring and going back to work at C. Lewis construction. He enjoyed being around his family riding alongside one of his children with the windows down and listening to the oldies with no destination. He was a man of character, strong yet kind, thoughtful, and humble. His guidance, love and unwavering support were gifts that his family will cherish forever. Whether through his words, actions or simply his presence, he taught those around him the value of hard work, respect, perseverance, and love for family. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find peace in the memories he leaves behind, the lessons he taught, the love he gave, and the countless moments shared together. His legacy will continue to live on in the lives of all who are blessed to know him. Forever loved, Forever remembered, and Forever missed.

Hackie was the former husband of Mrs. Bernice Babb (Fred) for more than 22 years. During this union was born Charles “Butch” Hurt, Michael “Mike” Hurt, both of Big Island, Virginia, Angela Hurt (Cartwright/Charles) of Lynchburg, Virginia, and daughter out of nothing but love, Tiwana Ross. He had 12 grandchildren, Brittany Quiggle (Michael), Alisha Bass (Darrell), Anthony Lock II (Niesha & Zan), CJ Hurt (Shiane), Makayla Hurt (Dalton), Michael Hurt (Isabelle), Aliyah Lock (Michael), Marley Hurt, Avisha Hurt, Nakiah and Nakayla Spinner, and Amari Ross; 16 great-grandchildren, Darrell III, Deangelo, Damien, Alivia Bass, Teagan Quiggle, Elaine and Athena Lock, Antwyn Smith, Lauren Weaver, Eleanor and Emanuel Hurt, Brantley and Harper Hyatt, Camila Hurt, Aviva Hurt, and Ace Lock; devoted cousins, George and Kenneth Hurt, and Pat Spinner; devoted nephews Curtis “Poochie” Dabney, Charlie Hamilton, Charles Hamilton and Thomas Hamilton, Mark Allen Fuller, Xavier Fuller, and Joshua Fuller; devoted niece, Arlene Fuller; devoted friend Todd Manley, a close friend, Othea Freeman; as well as many friends and family in the community.

A funeral service celebrating Hackie’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg with interment at Sharon Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. A fellowship celebrating Hackie will be held at 2220 Cobbs St., Lynchburg, Va. following the interment.

The family will be receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. Friends and family are welcome to visit at all other times at his daughter’s house, 2220 Cobbs Street, Lynchburg, Va.
