Carmen Pampillo Evans (affectionately known as DeeDee), born April 22nd, 1928, passed away on April 29th, 2026, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was home and surrounded by her family. Carmen was predeceased by her parents, Leandro and Ramona Pampillo; husband, Captain Edward Marshall Evans; and daughter, Carmen Evans Edwards (Woody). She is survived by her daughter, Mercie Evans Winfree; grandchildren, Christopher Lawrence (Orlando, FL), Elizabeth Ballard (Heath) (Forest, VA), and Edward Winfree (Charlottesville, VA); and great granddaughter, Tessa Marie Ballard. She also has a loving extended family spread across the globe.
Born in the “greatest city in the world”, Carmen spent her young life between bustling New York City and Galicia, Spain. Later, in her professional life, she was the executive secretary at Crown Cork & Seal. Upon retirement, she and the love of her life moved to Virginia to drop anchor at their beloved Holding Ground Farm.
Carmen and Captain Ed were very involved in their community – farming and cattle, politics and banking. Carmen was a founding director of the Community Bank of Forest. She volunteered with multiple community services and, with friends, founded a women’s investment club. She and the captain were also instrumental in the building of St. Thomas More Catholic Church where they were devout parishioners.
Family was always at the top of Carmen’s list of priorities. She dedicated her life to the loving care of her parents, daughters, and grandchildren. Her first and only great grandchild, Tessa, was the light of her life.
