Carlton Livingston Purvis, III, of Lynchburg, passed away on January 11, 2026. He was born on December 14, 1960, in Atlanta, GA. A son of the late Joan Speir Purvis and Carlton Livingston Purvis, Jr.
Carlton was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg. He had been a Hospital Facilities Planning Consultant in Cupertino, CA, a CEO of several healthcare non-profits in Medford, OR, and an administrator at Centra Health in Lynchburg, VA. He loved helping people get access to the proper medical care they needed. He helped design several hospitals, mental health facilities, and community access facilities. He was instrumental in developing the Community Access Network Health Clinic on 5th and Federal streets in Lynchburg, VA. He loved hiking in the mountains. His love for nature was captured in the many incredible pictures he took of the mountains, wildflowers, and waterfalls he encountered in his adventures. He was known for his funny wit and warm, gentle spirit that made all those around him immediately gravitate to him. He will be sorely missed by friends and family.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Dora Garcia Manas Purvis; two children, Carlton Simeon Purvis, IV and his wife Leah, and Gabrielle Isadora Purvis; two grandchildren, Atlas and Althea; two siblings, Kevin Purvis and his wife, Susan, and Cynthia Hedrick and her husband, Danny; nieces and nephews, Alexandra Smith and her husband Josh, Ransom Purvis, Sandra Nixon and her husband, Dylan, Abbey Gillispie and her husband, Trevor, and Erin Thompson and her husband, Palmer. Also surviving are other aunts, uncles, cousins, grand nephews, and many friends.

A funeral service and celebrations of Carlton’s life will be conducted at 2 p.m. on January 17, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, Bedford, Virginia with Rev. Ajay Pillai officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 1p.m. Burial will be at Peaks Church and Community Cemetery. Carlton fell in love with the setting of the cemetery and its natural beauty. We encourage anyone who wants to join us at the cemetery. Following the graveside committal the family will gather for additional fellowship and food from 5:30pm until 7:30pm back at the home of Carlton and Dora.
