Bruce A. Smith, 76, of Madison Heights, Virginia, passed away on May 25, 2026.

Born in Japan on September 25, 1949, while his parents, Anthony and Virginia Smith, were serving in the United States military, Bruce spent much of his childhood experiencing different parts of the world. As the son of military parents, he lived in many places such as Japan, Germany, and Alaska before settling in Virginia at the age of sixteen. Those early experiences helped shape the curiosity and appreciation for people, cultures, and history that remained with him throughout his life.

After graduating from Spotsylvania High School in 1968, Bruce pursued a career in computer science and engineering. His work took him to Texas and Connecticut before he eventually returned to Virginia, where he spent his later years surrounded by family.

Bruce's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He loved studying military history, particularly the Civil War, and had a deep appreciation for world cultures. An avid reader, he could often be found with a book in hand, eager to learn about virtually any subject that captured his attention. He enjoyed art in all its forms, whether creating it himself or admiring the work of others. Music was another lifelong passion, and his tastes ranged from Eric Clapton to opera. He played guitar and took great joy in sharing his love of music with his grandchildren.

More than anything, Bruce valued the people in his life. Whether through conversation, a shared interest, a listening ear, or quiet support when it was needed most, Bruce had a way of making people feel welcome, valued, and cared for.

Bruce is survived by his son, Derick Smith and wife Megan of Madison Heights, Virginia; Kristina Konarski of Vernon, Connecticut, whom he helped raise from an early age and considered his own daughter, and her husband Chris Konarski; five grandchildren, Alexander, Tatiana, Tristan, Liam, and Layla; and his dear friends David and Trudy Oliver and Phil Oliver, who were family in every sense of the word.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Virginia Smith, and by Buster, the family dog, affectionately known by his children as the favorite child. A devoted dog lover, Bruce never met a dog he didn't like, and few dogs failed to love him in return.

A private celebration of life will be held in the fall with Bruce's closest family and friends. The family warmly welcomes memories and stories of Bruce that may be shared at that time.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Madison Heights is assisting the family.
