Brenda Nanette Anderson Calloway, 79, of Lynchburg, Virginia transitioned on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
Born to the late James and Dorothy Anderson of Lynchburg, Brenda was a proud graduate of Dunbar High School, Class of 1964. She continued her education at West Virginia State University, where she earned her undergraduate degree and became a devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She was also nominated Miss West Virginia State University in 1967. Her commitment to education led her to obtain a Master’s degree in Education from University of Virginia in 1994.
Brenda dedicated many years to shaping young minds as a beloved teacher in Altavista City Schools. A lifelong learner, Brenda had a strong quest for knowledge and embraced continuous learning throughout her life. She obtained a criminal justice degree from CVCC, and in her late 60’s, Brenda earned a law degree from Liberty University.
Outside of the classroom, she found joy in flower gardening and took pride in cultivating beautiful blooms, along with crocheting. Reflecting her deep appreciation for language and culture, she was fluent in six languages, including French, and taught in Sorbonne in Paris while living abroad.
Brenda is survived by two sons, Raphael Calloway (Aqeela) and Jay Calloway (Charmane); six grandchildren, Naseem, Zaire, Kenya, Jayson, Ariah, and Julian; one sister, Jocelyn Anderson Hall (Elisha); and a niece, Joelyssa. Her legacy of education will continue to live on through all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Tharp Funeral Chapel on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 1:00 PM. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
