Benny R. Montgomery, E.A., 87, of Lynchburg, Virginia passed away on February 19, 2026. He was the son of the late Troy Montgomery and Mabel Montgomery. Born September 6, 1938, in Danville, Virginia.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving four years during the Korean war; receiving letters of commendation for sharpshooter and expert rifle. He remained in the National Guard for 21 years, retiring in 1991.
Benny pursued a career in accounting attending Phillips business school. He became an enrolled agent practicing tax law with the utmost integrity and enjoyed navigating complex IRS tax matters. He taught accounting at local colleges. Montgomery accounting was started by Benny 55 years ago.
He was an active member of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church, served as the treasurer for many years, on the board of deacons and taught Sunday school. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for 45 years. He immensely enjoyed western square dancing, as well as deep study of history and theology. A main joy of his life was his granddaughters, Whitney, Summer, Savannah and Kayla.
In addition to his parents, he has preceded in death by his sister, Martha Lou Jennings, brother, William Eugene Montgomery, and stepson, Charles Thomas Miles, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Davis Montgomery, stepdaughter, Julie Miles, granddaughters, Whitney Field (Josh), Summer Miles, Savannah Miles and Kayla Pierce.
A celebration of Benny's life will be held at 10:00a.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at Chestnut Hill Baptist Church. The family will be receiving friends from 4:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.
