Barbara Lee Ubele, 77, of Madison Heights, Virginia, formerly of Franklinville, New Jersey, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2026. She was the daughter of the late Harry S. Betham and Irene R. Betham.

Barbara was born an identical twin on February 14, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was the oldest of seven children. She attended school at Mastbaum Vocational High School where she met her high school sweetheart, Richard Ubele Sr. They were married for 55 years before his passing in 2024.

Early in her life, Barbara worked for Fleer Corporation, packing chewing gum and trading cards. Eventually, she would spend the rest of her career caring for disabled women and children. Barbara enjoyed baking, crocheting, and quilting. She loved the Lord and was a member of Thomas Road Baptist church in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Barbara’s family was everything to her. Her three children and eight grandchildren were her pride and joy. Each one held a special place in her heart and she had a tremendous impact on each of their lives. She looked forward to Christmases, Thanksgivings, and summer vacations spent together every year. These precious memories and traditions will be remembered forever.

Barbara is survived by her children, Richard Ubele, Jr. (Laurel), Elizabeth Rose (Antwan), and Robert Ubele (Kim); siblings, Harry Betham and Carol Apelt; and 8 grandchildren: Katie, Addison, Ryan, George, William, Mason, Nicholas, and Chelsea.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by siblings, John Betham, William (Billy) Betham, Bette Patton (her identical twin), and Irene Warren.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Christian Appalachian Project.

Tharp Funeral Home, Madison Heights is assisting the family.
