Alma Lee Lancaster Grubbs

Alma Lee Lancaster Grubbs went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Dec. 18, 2015. She was the beloved wife of the late Merrill Howard Grubbs for 51 years. Alma was born in Naples, NC, Oct. 5, 1926, the older daughter of Oren and Lucy Lancaster. She graduated from Maryville College with a B.A. in Bible and Christian Education. She and Merrill met there and wed in 1948. In 1961, Alma and Merrill went to S. Korea with their 5 children and began a 30-year career as Presbyterian missionaries. Alma primarily taught at Hanil Women’s Seminary: piano, organ, preschool methods, English conversation, and puppetry. The couple retired to Lynchburg, VA, in 1992 where Alma continued to share her gifts of teaching, hospitality and friendship. Following Merrill’s death in 1999, Alma resided at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg until 2010 when she moved to Bedford County Nursing Home. Alma is survived by her sister, Edith Mussler, of Toccoa, GA; her children, as well as 7 grandchildren: Jeff W. Grubbs and wife, Gloria, of Lynchburg; Cynthia V. Horvath & husband, William, of Salem, VA (Ben Viemeister); D. Scott Grubbs and wife, Sarah, of Greenville, SC (Jonathan, Beth, Daniel); Tim G. Lowly and wife, Sherrie, of Itasca, IL (Temma); Amy G. Moore and husband, William, of Bedford, VA (Rachel, Naomi); brother-in-law David H. Grubbs and wife, Sue; many nieces and nephews. Alma was preceded in death by her parents and husband; grandson Jeffrey Grubbs; son-in-law Peter Viemeister; brother-in-law Walter Mussler; brother-in-law Owen Grubbs and wife, Marcia; sister-in-law Doris Timmerman and husband, Harold. A memorial service will be held at Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at 1:30 p.m. Visitation with the family will follow the service at the church.
