Alda Lorena Mergler Burnette

Alda Lorena Mergler Burnette, 91, of Leatherwood Farms, Leesville, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012.

She is survived by a brother, George L.P. Mergler and family; a son, Mahlon Admire III and family, Mary, Josh and Brett; a son, James Tilson and wife Sam; a daughter, Janis Burnette Hubbard and family, Henry, Kyle, Christy and Blair; and a son, Robert Kyle and family, Sandra and Bryce.

Alda was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Mahlon Admire (Bill) Burnette; and three brothers, Robert, Tilson and Don Mergler.

A daughter of Robert Wayne Mergler and Myrtle Tilson Mergler, she was born in Norton on Aug. 16, 1921.

She graduated from Altavista High School in 1938 and attended Mary Washington College.

She was employed in The Lane Company offices before marrying Bill at Fort Benning, Ga. in 1942.  After World War II, she and Bill settled on the family farm in Leesville.

She especially enjoyed gardening and hosting extended family gatherings. As Pioneer Hokies, she and Bill attended Virginia Tech football games for over 50 years, at which she always treated family and friends to a grand tailgate picnic.

She was also active in civic activities, working with the U.S. Census Bureau and the Campbell County Elections Board.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
