The Benefits of Cremation Services

July 12, 2016

Cremation has become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional burial in recent years. Why ? Cremation offers several benefits to the family of the deceased and can even help loved ones through the grieving process.

What is Cremation?

Most people call the remains of cremation, “ashes.” The Cremation Association of North America (CANA) defines cremation as “The mechanical or thermal dissolution process that reduces human remains to bone fragments.” Because cremated remains do not pose a health risk, they can be retained, interred, or dispersed by relatives.

How Common is Cremation?

Cremation is becoming a more popular choice in today’s society. The Huffington Post reports that only 1 in 28 (under 5%) chose creation in 1958, but today, over 40% of people choose cremation. About one-third of families bury their loved one’s ashes, another third keep them, and a final third scatter them in a special place.

How do Cremation Services Benefit a Family?

Choosing cremation can simplify many of the elements of a funeral service and burial. Other benefits are:

  • Embalming is unnecessary.
  • Memorials and services are not necessarily tied to one geographic location.
  • Services can be held at a later date when it is more convenient to families.

Financial Benefits of Cremation

One of the main reasons that people choose cremation is that it can be less expensive than a traditional burial. Cremation often saves the family the cost of:

  • a cemetery plot
  • a casket (one can be rented just for the funeral)
  • embalming
  • headstone
  • burial fee, etc.

In general, cremations save as much as 50% of cost of a burial. If you or your family member is a Veteran the Veterans Affairs burial benefits include free grave space for the internment of cremated remains in a National Cemetery.

What About Funeral Services?

Choosing cremation services does not prevent the family from having a funeral service. Families can still have an open casket if they wish and religious rites can still be performed. This can all be arranged by your funeral director and can even be preplanned well before the end of a loved one’s life.

Ways Families Can Remember

While some families prefer to bury remains from a cremation in a cemetery plot, others prefer:

  • Placing remains in decorative urns for display at home.
  • Making memorial keepsakes and jewelry.
  • Scattering ashes in a park, from the air, in the ocean or in a garden.
  • Mixing ashes in cement to create a special mosaic.
  • Creating ashes into a ring, stained glass, or vinyl record.
  • Using ashes in tattoo ink, turning them into fireworks, or putting them into a Teddy bear or other comforting item.

Ask Your Funeral Director About the Many Cremation Service Options

Ask your funeral director about the cremation services that the funeral home offers. You can even include cremation when you are preplanning funeral arrangements, which can ease much of the stress families endure when losing a loved one. Cremation can be a cost-effective, thoughtful way to plan one’s final arrangements.

Planning ahead isn’t always something we naturally gravitate toward—especially when it comes to end-of-life decisions. It’s easy to put off, to say “someday,” or to assume there will always be more time. But preplanning your funeral or cremation arrangements is one of the most thoughtful and meaningful gifts you can leave behind for the people you love. What Is Preplanning? Preplanning is simply the process of making your final wishes known ahead of time. This can include decisions about burial or cremation, the type of service you’d like, music, readings, and even the small personal touches that reflect your life. It doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, even a simple plan written down can provide clarity and comfort when it’s needed most. Why More Families Are Choosing to Plan Ahead 1. It Relieves Emotional Burden When a loved one passes, families are often faced with dozens of decisions in a very short time, many of them while navigating deep grief. By preplanning, you remove that weight. Your family won’t have to wonder what you would have wanted, they’ll already know. 2. It Protects Your Family Financially Funeral costs can add up quickly depending on services selected. Preplanning gives you the opportunity to guarantee certain services and merchandise, avoid future inflation, and prevent overspending during emotional decision-making. 3. It Ensures Your Wishes Are Honored Every life is unique and every service should reflect that. When you plan ahead, you can choose burial or cremation, select meaningful music or readings, and include personal touches that tell your story. 4. It Gives You Time and Control Planning in advance allows you to make decisions thoughtfully and without pressure. There’s no urgency. No rushed decisions. Just clarity and confidence. 5. It Brings Peace of Mind Knowing everything is taken care of allows you to focus on what matters most: living fully and spending time with loved ones. Preplanning Doesn’t Have to Mean Prepaying You have options: document your wishes, set aside funds gradually, or explore pre-need plans or insurance options. Families are guided through these choices with no pressure—just support and information. A Simple Step Today Can Make All the Difference Tomorrow Preplanning is about easing the path for those you love. It gives them space to grieve, remember, and heal—without added stress.
