5 Life Lessons We Learn from Mom
Moms are often our first teachers. From how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to how to manage your first heartbreak, there are countless life lessons a mother teaches her child. Here are just a few.
Life Lessons Learned from Mom
1. Take good care of yourself (and say yes to the chocolate).
While chocolate can’t solve all your problems, it can certainly bring a little comfort. Whether it’s chocolate or some other kind of treat, remember to take care of yourself. That means treating yourself every once in awhile, even when life is crazy and out of control. Paying attention to your own health makes it a lot easier to handle the hard things in life.
2. In the end, it’s the people that matter.
Our moms taught us to prioritize relationships. Most importantly, she modeled this philosophy in her daily life, which made this advice convincing instead of cliché. These days, smartphones and laptops make keeping in touch with others easier than ever. While nothing can replace face-to-face conversation, sending a quick text to let a friend know you’re thinking about them can go along way.
3. Everything in moderation.
Moderation may not always feel easy, but it is freeing to live without deprivation – or excess. Be mindful of finding moderation in all aspects of life: work and “play,” exercise and rest, and time alone and time with others. Finding this balance in your life helps manage stress, and keeps your priorities straight.
4. Keep it simple.
A birthday party for a toddler need not be an extravagant affair, and dinner guests won’t enjoy their evening any less if you forgo the Beef Bourguignon for your trusty spaghetti dish. Sometimes simple is better, and helps us keep our sanity.
5. Don’t take yourself too seriously.
Getting a grade less than an A or having a “Mom Fail” need not be cause for self-deprecation. It’s ok to laugh at yourself. Remember, everyone makes mistakes.
Moms teach their kids a lot of valuable lessons. Those lessons are like the best gifts: timeless, useful, and cherished. What’s the most memorable lesson your mom taught you?
